Why the name calls ''VADDUVAKAL''
At the heart of our village, the picturesque Nandhi River flows and eventually merges with the sea. During the rainy season, when the river swells and causes flooding, a channel was constructed to safely direct the excess water from the river into the ocean. This involved cutting through the land between the sea and the river to create a drainage canal.
Because of this canal, the village was originally named “Vedduvaikkaal”. Over time, this name evolved into “Vadduvakal”, as our ancestors recount.
It is noteworthy that the name “Vedduvaikkaal” continues to be used in all official government documents even today.
Vadduvakal: Our Beautiful Village
There is a Tamil proverb that says, “The beauty of a village lies in its river.” In that sense, our village flourishes and prospers along the serene Nandhi River that flows gracefully through its heart. Vadduvakal is a picturesque village located in the Mullaitivu District of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. It is situated just 3 kilometers from Mullai town along the main road of Mullaitivu.
Vadduvakal is bordered by the Hindu Sea to the north, the Nandhi River to the south, Mullivaikkal village to the west, and Selvapuram village to the east. Administratively, the village falls under the Mullivaikkal East Grama Sevakar division within the Karaitheevu-Pattu Divisional Secretariat of Mullaitivu District.
Origin of the Name
At the heart of the village, the Nandhi River flows and eventually merges with the sea. During the monsoon season, the river often swells, causing floods. To safely channel the floodwaters into the ocean, a drainage canal was constructed by cutting through the land between the river and the sea.
Because of this canal, the village was initially called “Vedduvaikkal”. Over time, the name evolved into “Vadduvakal”, as recounted by our ancestors. Notably, the original name, “Vedduvaikkal”, continues to be used in all official government documents even today.
Temple
Situated along the banks of the Nandhi River, near the bridge and the peaceful Muschandi area, stands the Vadduvakal Sabthakannimar Temple. The temple is dedicated to the Sabthakannimars, who are revered as the primary deities for the people of Vadduvakal. Worship at the temple follows traditional Agamic rituals, and every Monday, special pujas are conducted for the goddess.
Annually, on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Aani, the temple hosts a vibrant cultural festival celebrating traditional rituals and the Pongal festival with great enthusiasm and community participation.
School
Our village school, Mu/Vedduvaikkal Government Tamil Mixed School, provides primary and secondary education, from grade 1 to grade 9. Managed by the government, it is one of the oldest schools in the Mullaitivu District. Established in 1917, the school is preparing to celebrate its centenary next year, marking over a hundred years of educational service to the community.
Sports
Vadduvakal is also known for its active sports culture. The village sports club, Vadduvakal Udayasooriyan Sports Club, excels in volleyball, football, and other traditional village games like Kilithattu. The teams from our village have consistently participated in district-level competitions organized by the Divisional Secretariat, frequently reaching the finals and winning trophies.
Our youth continue to work hard to elevate the standard of sports in Vadduvakal, ensuring that the village remains recognized for its athletic talent and community spirit.
